Living on The Avenue in Greenwich

Most people in town know it as The Avenue. Some call it Rodeo Drive East, a nod to its emergence as a luxe retail strip whose store roster rivals that of its Beverly Hills namesake. But to a relative handful of people, the tony stores and fancy restaurants are just the background scenery of their everyday lives. Greenwich Avenue is their home.
Shoppers trying on stiletto heels at Stuart Weitzman or ogling the latest bling at Tiffany’s have no idea that living just over their heads might be a single guy binge-watching “Homeland,” or a mother helping her kids with school work. It is a largely invisible sub-culture whose members seem to relish a small taste of urban living in the town synonymous with suburban affluence.
“It may be hard to imagine, but we are a very close community on the avenue,” says Christine Dodaj, who, with her husband Jino and their two daughters, lives in a nicely appointed, two-bedroom apartment near the top of the hill. “We get together for drinks. We watch out for each other. We even have a Memorial Day beach party at Tod’s Point every year.
“We love the convenience of it. You really don’t ever have to leave or get in a car,” said the outgoing 42-year-old. “My husband and I grab coffee at CFCF most mornings, and my girls ride their bikes around the park next to the Havemeyer Building.” Click here to continue reading.
