STAMFORD -- Beginning Feb. 1, city seniors can apply for thousands of dollars in property tax relief through a newly tweaked abatement program, but some city officials are concerned seniors may not know about it.
Under the amended program, seniors may receive between $500 and $2,000 in property tax abatements per household.
The Board of Representatives gave the plan final approval on Jan. 5. The changes will sunset at the end of the year.
With only a few hundred seniors taking advantage of abatements in past years, "We're trying to get it publicized more clearly," said Rep. Jay Fountain, who chairs the Fiscal Committee for the board. "We don't think a lot of seniors even knew about it."
The new formula for tax relief allows single applicants up to $2,000 in credit if their income is up to $40,000. If they bring home between $40,001 and $65,000, they can only qualify for $1,200, and they can only receive $500 if their annual income is between $65,001 and $85,000.
Those increments are the same for married applicants, but the income thresholds are higher, with the middle range falling between $50,001 and $80,000 and the income cap at $100,000. Read More.
