Trumbull seniors could get tax break for volunteer work

TRUMBULL -- If you're a senior citizen who wants to slash your tax bill, you might soon be able to work it off -- as a town volunteer.
Under an ordinance proposed by First Selectman Tim Herbst, residents who are 65 or older may be able to get a property tax credit for performing volunteer work.
If approved as submitted, seniors who perform 100 hours of volunteer work would get a $600 tax credit and those who perform 200 hours of service would get a $1,200 credit.
The ordinance is similar to one enacted by Danbury several years ago and would affect seniors age 65 and over.
The proposal will be taken up by the Town Council at its meeting next month.
"It's a wonderful idea," said Marianne Savarese, a regular at the senior center on Priscilla Place, when told about the proposal. "It's an incentive." Read More.
