“Tis’ the season for ‘porch pirates,’” the Connecticut State Police warn.
Think of porches as the high seas, and all those Cyber Monday deals as Spanish galleons full of treasure.
“Pirates” are creeping.
After all, there’s a fleet of packages arriving on porches this week after record-setting sales nationally, according to Reuters. Here are five suggestions from the CSP on how to repel porch pirates from your deck.
TRACK the package. This will give you an indication of when it will arrive so you can plan accordingly.
SIGNATURE required upon delivery will prevent your items from being left out in plain view.
ASK a friend, neighbor or family member to receive it for you if you know they’ll be home.
PICKUP at the shipping/receiving facility such as FedEx or UPS stores.
INSTRUCT the company to leave the package around the rear of your residence or underneath a porch.
Already order your package? Check with the company delivering it and you might be able to modify delivery options mid transit.
For example, UPS can give you a narrow delivery time upon request (sometimes for a fee). FedEx offers rerouting to different addresses, even if the package is in transit. Packages can be often held for pickup.
Feel safe from porch pirates? Don’t forget about that other danger from the high seas: rain.
